From the milk carton to the gift box

The customer's brief was to design a customizable gift box that would serve as unique packaging for presenting their products. A process that, as it turned out, took a lot of time and effort. Why? We would like to address this in the following sections:

A Tetra Pak as a source of inspiration

For this project, the designer was inspired by the simple elegance of a Tetra Pak. However, this was only the starting point, because in the end, every package had to be a kind of tailor-made suit for the products it contained. No "one-size-fits-all", but a solution that was tailored to fit.

There was a lot of tinkering and brainstorming. The first designs were created, the first samples were made, until it finally fit. In the die-cutting form (see picture on the right), different colored lines are used to define which areas are to be cut, grooved or scored. On the SinaJet machine, the magenta lines are then cut, the yellow lines are grooved and the cyan lines are scored.

Sustainable material choice

It is no secret that paper plays a central role in a printing company. The production of recycled paper uses around two thirds less energy, water and CO2 than virgin fiber paper. From an ecological point of view, recycled paper is therefore always the preferred choice. Our packaging is another sign of our commitment to environmental friendliness using FSC and Blue Angel certified materials.

The balance between stability and simplicity

As our packaging is made of thick paper rather than cardboard, it requires additional consideration. First and foremost, the choice of the right material was crucial. After all, it should not only provide protection but also bear the weight of the product. At the same time, this met the customers’ requirements for simple, uncomplicated and stable packaging that required little to no glue. This makes the final steps easier for the customer.

A tailor-made experience

But that wasn't all: To perfectly implement the unique shape of the packaging, a tailor-made piece of wood (see picture on the right) had to be made in-house in the final step. This piece of wood fits exactly into the gift baskets, which means it can be folded and glued precisely on the line and helps the customer to complete the packaging in the final step.

The path to perfection is rarely straight, but that's not the point. It's about sticking with it, being patient and taking small steps in the right direction. And that's exactly what our team did with flying colors. Every detail, from the right groove depth to the slots for hooking, was individually adapted to the products. It took a lot of experimentation until the final product met all the criteria.
