Paper price development 2026: Causes and effects

Papierpreisentwicklung

The international markets for paper and cardboard are currently under considerable pressure. This development is having a direct impact on paper prices. Current developments in the global raw materials, energy, and logistics markets mean that rising prices must also be expected in Europe.

A key influencing factor is the ongoing escalation in the Middle East. This directly impacts global supply chains: shipping routes are being adjusted, transport times are increasing, and the costs for freight, energy, and insurance are rising significantly. At the same time, higher prices for natural gas and crude oil are leading to additional burdens along the entire production chain.

The paper industry itself is also affected. Rising costs for pulp, chemicals, and other raw materials, coupled with currently low capacity utilization in Europe, are increasing the economic pressure on manufacturers. As a result, numerous producers have already announced price adjustments for the first and second quarters of 2026.

In addition, logistics costs are being adjusted. Increased transport expenses and uncertain supply chains necessitate surcharges to ensure continued reliable supply. For companies, this translates into an overall tense market situation. While exchange rate effects – such as a strong Swiss franc – were able to temporarily cushion price increases, a second phase of price adjustments is now emerging.

Gutenberg AG is continuously monitoring these developments and is in close contact with its partners. The goal remains to minimize the impact of paper price fluctuations on customers while simultaneously ensuring a stable supply.
