On Tuesday, March 28th, the annual BerufsCHECK-day took place again at Gutenberg AG. We opened the doors to numerous young and interested students who wanted to gain an insight into the world of work and the various career opportunities in the printing industry. The three apprenticeships of polygrapher, print media processor and media technologist were examined in detail. In addition to the company tour of the various work areas, there were many other exciting items on the agenda.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the BerufsCHECK-day, we welcomed the students and divided them into groups. Each group was assigned to a station. At the end of the day, all groups visited each station once in rotation. While at some you could sit back and listen, at others you had to put in some creative effort or prove your skills.<\/p>\n

The box is designed in the prepress<\/h2>\n

In the preliminary stage, the students were able to design a box on the computer. Everything from flower motifs to astronauts and planets was included. Then it went to digital printing, where the boxes were printed. The box was used to store the many small flyers about the different jobs at Gutenberg AG.<\/p>\n

The box is further processed in the finishing department<\/h2>\n

But be careful \u2013 the flyers had to be folded correctly first. And the box cannot serve its purpose if it is unfolded and unglued. This is exactly what happens in the finishing department. This is where the printed products are folded, cut, glued and bound. And with the many types of folds (wrap fold, double parallel fold, closed altar fold and Leporello) it is easy to get confused!<\/p>\n

Phew - now some people need a breather. After a delicious snack with croissants and a drink, the presentation continued. Hubert Biedermann shows the history of Gutenberg AG with impressive pictures and visual material. The children hold the large printed letters of the past in their hands, perplexed. Many of them find it hard to believe that printing used to be so complex.<\/p>\n

In offset printing, the students mix colors<\/h2>\n

The next step was offset printing. Here, the students were able to work practically again. Using a spatula and paint, they mixed two colors to achieve a very specific shade.<\/p>\n
